A new report summarizes proceedings from an NEI workshop on extracellular vesicles (Evs) – cell-secreted nanoparticles that mediate cell-cell communication. The report touches on EV applications in diagnosis, therapy, and disease prognosis within the visual system.

The current NEI strategic plan tagged EVs as a research priority for their effects on eye health and disease and their translational potential as a cell-free approach for regenerative medicine.
