The September 14, 2023, workshop brought together multidisciplinary experts in the research of extracellular vesicles—cell-secreted nanoparticles that mediate cell-cell communication via their various payloads, including RNA, DNA, proteins, and lipids. The current NEI strategic plan tagged EVs as a research priority for their effects on eye health and disease and their translational potential as a cell-free approach for regenerative medicine. The group explored the utility of EVs and identified critical knowledge gaps, needs, and opportunities for EV research.
