The S-index challenge aims to incentivize and reward data sharing by promoting a new metric, the S-index, that will assess how effectively researchers share data.

Despite a cultural shift toward data sharing, simply sharing data does not guarantee its value as a resource. Participants will be judged on their proposed methods for calculating the index, focusing on various key factors that influence the value of shared data, including the FAIR principles (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, and Reusable), the timeliness with which data is shared, the completeness of data annotation and metadata, the frequency with which shared data is utilized by other researchers, and the influence of shared data on subsequent publications and patents.
